Some years ago I joined the Peace Corps. I’d grown up in a prissy New England prep school where my dad taught French. The PC sent me to live with hunters and gatherers in the Amazon rainforest. Early one morning I got up with the family I was staying with and turned my transistor radio on to a station high in the Andes. Music blasted through the hut. It kept on playing. Finally, he sat down beside me and stared at it for the longest time. Then he turned to me and said, “All right, tell me the secret. How’d you get all those people into that tiny box?”

The radio was an objective reality. The people in it were his perception of reality.

Shamans describe this perceived reality as “the dream.” They say that “the world is as we dream it, as we perceive it.” To change ourselves and human societies we need to shapeshift the dream: our perceived reality. This can be personal, communal, global … or all three.
