Patty Wise is a partner at Spengler Nathanson Ltd. and was among the first class certified by the
Ohio State Bar Association as a specialist in Labor and Employment Law. She provides practical, preventive advice to employers, and represents litigants in state and federal court and before administrative agencies. Patty will be serving as a representative of the Ohio State Bar
Association at the request of Chief Ohio Supreme Court Justice Maureen O’Connor to develop a
program to address the issue of harassment.
Former EEOC Chair Jenny Yang appointed Patty as one of 16 members of the EEOC Select Task
Force on Workplace Harassment, and Patty is a mediator for the EEOC. She recently presented
at the Indiana EEOC Technical Assistance Program seminar.
Patty has trained, provided webinars, and spoken before thousands in all areas of employment
law. She is on the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-
Madison and has been an adjunct or visiting professor at the University of Toledo College of Law since 1999. She has written several books and numerous articles on employment law matters.
She was recently quoted in the Wall Street Journal and interviewed on NPR regarding sexual
harassment in the workplace.

Former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Judith Lanzinger appointed Patty to the Board of Professional Conduct, where Patty is serving her second term. Patty is president of Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Legal Aid of Western Ohio, and Northwest Ohio Development Agency and a board member of the Toledo Fair Housing Center.

A member of the faculty since 1994, Mr. Salem teaches clinical courses that provide students with the skills necessary to successfully practice law while advancing the law school’s social justice mission.
Under Mr. Salem’s supervision, law students represent disadvantaged clients throughout Ohio in a variety of legal matters, including family law, probate, domestic violence, civil rights, political asylum, consumer protection, housing and non-profit law.
Mr. Salem has also established several policy and law reform projects at the law school that have a broad impact on the community. Among the projects he currently directs are the Safe School Project, which addresses the detrimental effects of bullying in schools, and the Prison
Reentry Project, which attempts to reduce rates of recidivism by addressing legal barriers to a successful transition from incarceration to freedom. The projects give students the opportunity
to critique the law and work for reform through education, direct representation, and advocacy before legislative bodies. Mr. Salem has given presentations of his work at legal education
conferences around the country.
Mr. Salem has been recognized for his work in the community by being awarded the Spirit of Fair Housing Public Policy Award by the Fair Housing Center of Northwest Ohio, the annual Civil Liberties Award by the ACLU of Northwest Ohio, and the Public Interest Law Award by
Advocates for Basic Legal Equality and the Toledo Bar Association. Mr. Salem was also awarded a Program for Academic Excellence grant from the University of Toledo for his work involving school safety issues.
Mr. Salem recently published an article co-authored with Julie Sacks entitled “Victims Without Legal Remedies: Why Kids Need Schools to Develop Comprehensive Anti-Bullying Policies, 72 Albany L. Rev. 147 (2009). He also published an article with Professor Susan Martyn entitled “The Integrated Law School Practicum: Synergizing Theory and Practice,” 68 Louisiana L. Rev. 715 (2008). He is also the author of “The Strengths and Weaknesses of Human Rights Ordinances, 48 Cleveland State Law Review (2000).
Mr. Salem is a graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law. He is a frequent speaker on civil rights issues and is active in several organizations. He currently serves on the Board of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Board of the Toledo Bar Association, the Advisory Board of the Ohio Drug Assistance Program, the Board of Planned Parenthood of Northwest Ohio and he is a member of the Flower Memorial Hospital Ethics Committee. He is a former
Trustee of the Ohio ACLU and a former member of the National Advisory Board of Equal Justice Works in Washington, D.C.


Cherrefe Kadri Related seminars and products: 1


Cherrefe Kadri has been a practicing attorney in Toledo, Ohio since 1993. Prior to that time, she taught in a public elementary school for five years and then went to Kuwait and taught in a private American school for three years. She has been an active member of the Toledo Bar Association and serves on the Bar Admissions and Juvenile Court committees. She is also a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Lucas County Bar Association, and sits on the boards of the Toledo Bar Association and the Toledo Bar Association Foundation.
Cherrefe received her bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University in 1977 and her J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law in 1993. Ms. Kadri is a long-time member of the Toledo Islamic community, having served on the Council(Board of Directors) of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo for 18 years and completed her
third term as president of Council in 2015. She continues to volunteer at the ICGT as a Sunday School teacher and youth advisor.

Valerie Fatica is a local attorney and lifelong resident of Northwest Ohio. She began her higher education by receiving a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University in 2005, graduating magna cum laude and majoring in both Political Science and Spanish. Valerie returned to
Northwest Ohio to earn her law degree from the University of Toledo College of Law in May of 2008.
In law school, Valerie excelled academically, making the Dean’s List and attaining the highest rank in Constitutional Law II. She competed in and subsequently coached a Regional Moot Court competition team. Valerie served as a Teaching Assistant for the law school’s Advanced
Appellate Advocacy class. Valerie is a member of the local Toledo Bar Association. She volunteers her time doing Pro Bono work and received a Pro Bono Commendation from the Toledo Bar Association in 2009, 2010, and 2012 and the TBA Trustees Award in 2016.

Toledo Municipal Court


Vallie Bowman-English was elected Clerk of the Toledo Municipal Court in November of 2003 where she employs approximately 70 Deputy Clerks. She is the first African-American and first attorney to be elected to the position. Prior to her election as Clerk, Vallie was an Assistant
Lucas County Prosecutor. Vallie was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from the University of Toledo in 1992. Vallie received her Law Degree from the Ohio Northern University College of Law in 1995. She is married to
Common Pleas Court Judge Ian English and they have one son.
As Clerk, Vallie has implemented real time data entry in TMC courtrooms. This allows clerks to record entries as the Judge or Magistrate is ruling on the case(s) and gives other departments
and the public immediate access to the case information. In many instances, it also allows for further processing without having to wait for the case file to be delivered to locations within the court. Additionally, Vallie has increased the public's access to the Court's records by placing case information online and developing a mobile phone app for smart phones. Prior to this, the public had to call or come to the Clerk's office to inquire about case information. Images of court documents are also available through these tools. Vallie has been an invited speaker at
National Conferences to discuss the creation and implementation of the mobile court app which was one of the first of its kind in the country.
Vallie is a past president and current member of the Ohio Association of Municipal / County Court Clerks. She is also the Chair of the Lucas County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. In July of 2016, Vallie became the first minority President of the Toledo Bar Association in its 138 year history. She is the past Chair of the Susan G. Komen of NW Ohio Grants Peer Review Panel and a current member of the board and its executive committee. She is the immediate past President of the Toledo Chapter of The Links Incorporated, a community service organization.
Vallie is also an appointed member of the Ohio Supreme Court's Judicial Family Network Advisory Board.
Vallie has received many honors and awards in her career, including the Twenty Under Forty Leadership award, the YWCA Milestones Award, and the Toledo Labor-Management Cooperation Award.

Section Council and the OSBA Midwest Labor & Employment Law Seminar Planning Committee.
